Les McQuire
Dedication, Experience and Vision
I have been actively involved with the North Jersey ACS since I moved
to New Jersey in 1992.
Initially I attended meetings of the Organic Topical Group (OTG) but
after 4 years I was elected to the Executive Committee of the OTG and
also served as its Treasurer. I gained more experience and
responsibility, became Chair of the OTG and joined the North Jersey
Executive Committee.
I was elected Section Chair-elect and Councilor in 1998 and slowly
started to take on National responsibilities.
Nationally I chaired a sub-committee on the key Local Section
Activities Committee, represent Novartis on Corporation Associates,
where I chair the "programs" sub-committee, and serve on the ACS
Leadership Board Oversight Group. I was also a member of a group
helping to enhance and support Regional Meetings. In 2006 I was
elected to the ACS Committee on Committees (ConC) and serve as
ConC liaison to Budget and Finance (B&F) and the Committee on
Economic and Professional Affairs (CEPA). I also served as Chair of
one of the Presidential sub-themes for the Boston National Meeting.
Locally, I serve as Councilor and was Program Co-chair for MARM
2005.
Dedication
I have taken every opportunity to serve the ACS and our members by
organizing technical meetings, participating in training courses for
members and by serving on numerous committees.

At the Heroes in Chemistry Dinner
Vision
Mehdi Nafissi and I were able to establish "Bench To Pilot
Plant" as an institution in our area and even take it to a National
level. As this meeting developed over time we were able to
demonstrate the potential of the Team approach to meeting
organization. This approach has led to excellent meetings and
an increase in the numbers of chemists getting involved in the
leadership of ACS.
The vision of MARM 2005 as a "redefined" Regional Meeting
was realized in May 2005. I was central to the meeting proposal
and the idea that MARM could be a forum to bring together all
of the great symposia that the North Jersey ACS organizes.
In March 2007 the minisymposium/committee approach was
extended to the Northeastern Section (NESACS) when I was
co-chair of the inaugural Advances in Chemical Sciences
Symposium.
