Val Kuck
Director-at-Large of the American Chemical
Society

Valerie J. Kuck has provided the encouragement for many people to
take a more active role in the leadership of the North Jersey Section
and then in the National ACS organization. For 30 years, Valerie has
been a dedicated and resourceful ACS volunteer whose efforts have
led to lasting results and impact throughout the ACS.
One of the most impressive and enduring of Valerie’s many on-going
contributions to the ACS is her annual orchestration of North Jersey’s
week long celebration of National Chemistry Week. Each year
hundreds of volunteers are recruited from industrial and educational
organizations to participate in demonstrations, displays and talks at
local museums, schools and galleries. Thousands of members of the
public are exposed to chemistry and motivated chemists in the most
positive way possible. Valerie works with all of the volunteers to ensure
that the well-planned activities are truly “hands-on”, safe and that the
underlying chemistry is explained in an appropriate manner and
reinforces the educational value of this outreach. It is impossible to
know just how make young chemists have been nurtured by Valerie’s
tireless NCW efforts. Valerie is a role model who strives to take NCW
to additional communities which might not otherwise be exposed to
science. Valerie also makes a huge commitment to following-up with
volunteers ensuring that she personally thanks all of them! Valerie’s
accomplishments with National Chemistry Week have been recognized
with several National awards but the most lasting impact is the huge
numbers of chemists who became active in ACS as a result of Valerie’s
NCW activities and the ten’s of thousands of people exposed to
chemistry.
The North Jersey Leadership has been privileged to see Valerie work
on our Section’s nominations committee. In this, as in all of her ACS
work, Valerie is focused and seeks out the best options even if this
demands much more effort and commitment. Valerie has always
encouraged the Section to reach out, involve and develop people as
leaders of our events and governance. Once new volunteers are
identified she seeks out opportunities for them to contribute and grow in
experience and confidence. As a result the ACS not only has a superb
leader and volunteer in Valerie but it gains skilled and motivated new
leaders in the people she recruits and trains.
Val has had a tremendous impact throughout the whole ACS not just
because of the many committees she has chaired and the positive
changes that she has championed but through the people she has
touched with her enthusiasm, drive and compassion. Many ACS
members were fortunate to see this first hand when Val received the
Shirley B Radding award. This Award was presented at the 2000
National Meeting and a reception was held in Val’s honor – the large
room was filled by ACS members from all over the country and from
diverse backgrounds, all wanting to acknowledge how Valerie had
impacted them and their ACS lives.
Valerie J. Kuck would be an outstanding Director-at-Large.
