"Textiles, Chemistry and Colo(u)r: a Miscellany"
The Annual General Meeting of the Royal Society of Chemistry, (U.S.
Section) was held at the Princeton Club of New York on Saturday
November 17, 2007. All members were welcome and encouraged to
attend an evening that provided an opportunity to conduct the annual
business of the Section, a chance to visit friends and new
acquaintances, enjoy a pleasant meal, and to hear a stimulating and
timely talk.  The Princeton Club has for several years provided a
convenient venue for the annual general meeting, and again New York
City provided many possibilities for an enjoyable and productive day.
The program of the RSC U.S. Section Annual General Meeting provided
an intriguingly-titled presentation on the topic of “Textiles, Chemistry and
Colo(u)r: a miscellany” by Dr. Martin Bide of the University of Rhode
Island. Dr. Bide delivered on his promise to weave(!) a path that
included  gin and tonic, the Sopwith Camel, Brazil, several dozen eggs,
Isaac Newton and Alec Guinness - all while looking at the history of the
clothes we wear and the dyes they are coloured with.  This topic touched
on both scientific and cultural implications, and informed and interested
us all.

The evening began at 6:00 PM with a reception featuring hors d’oeuvres
and a cash bar, followed by dinner at 7:00 PM and the talk at about 8:00
PM after a short Section business meeting.  The meeting adjourn around
10 PM.
About our speaker:  Dr. Martin Bide studied dyestuff chemistry at the University of Bradford
and is currently the President of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists.
He is a professor in the Department of Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design at the
University of Rhode Island where he teaches courses in Textile Science, and conducts
research in biomedical materials.  He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
