The American Chemical Society is built on geographical and technical
subdivisions - the Local Sections and
Divisions.

There are 189 Local Sections in the ACS.

The North Jersey Section provides many programs and services to ACS
members in the North Jersey area:

The Indicator: is the monthly newsletter serving North Jersey and New
York.  This is mailed to some members but most receive it on-line.

The North Jersey section maintains an extensive
web site which lists future
events as well as showing photos and reports from many of the section's
activities.  The various pages here provide links to other ACS resources
and showcase ACS events by showing photos of them.

The
Executive Committee of the North Jersey Section is responsible for the
overall organization and leadership of the Section.  The various Topical
Groups also have elected Leadership Teams which organize programming
etc, for those groups.  Every Topical Group is represented on the Executive
Committee.

The Section has multiple
Topical Groups (local ACS groups focused on a
particular aspect of chemistry).  These groups include
Chromatography,
Drug Metabolism, Mass Spectrometry Discussion Group, MetroWomen,
Minority Affairs, NMR, Organic, Polymer and Younger Chemists.

The Section also supported the creating of the Lab Robotics Interest Group
which has developed into a separate organization.

The success of the North Jersey Section relies on the outstanding
volunteers and leaders throughout the Section, the existence of the Topical
Groups, effective planning and a willingness to challenge the dogma and try
new ideas.  This willingness to try new things lead to the concept of
"
Lunkhead Ideas".

The Section organizes many technical meetings including minisymposia.
Some of the most important of these include
The Baekeland Award and the
many meetings organized by the
Organic Topical Group such as the "Bench
To Pilot Plant" series and the various excellent Award, Spring and Fall
symposia.

The Section also provides many services for Teachers through the
Teachers Affiliates group and the Education Committee.  Programs such as
SEED, Take Your Child to Work and Mole Day have a huge impact on
students and future chemists.

If you are looking for a job or want to enhance your skills the North Jersey
Careers in Transition Group will be able to help. (Remember the National
ACS can also help with
career issues).  The courses that make up the ACS
Leadership Development System will also help ACS members enhance their
job skills.  Les is a Facilitator for two of these courses and has participated
in many
career activities and job fairs.

Outreach to the scientific and wider community is a key focus of ACS
activity in North Jersey.  Activities such as
National Chemistry Week attract
hundreds of participants and provide an opportunity for ACS members to
share their interested in chemistry with the community.
Les McQuire is very active in the North Jersey Section although he has also
contributed to activities in the
Northeastern Section (in and around Boston).
