Working Together Bring Great Programming to You!
The ACS’s international membership exceeds 19,000 and represents more than 100 countries.

More than 60 percent of the articles published in ACS journals and more than half of the material
covered in the Society’s
Chemical Abstracts Service ─ the world’s most comprehensive source of
chemical information ─ originates outside the United States.

ACS sponsors or promotes a number of international activities such as joint conferences with
chemical societies in India and other countries, and the International Chemical Congress of Pacific
Basin Societies (
PacifiChem), a weeklong scientific meeting, held once every five years in
conjunction with ACS counterparts in Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, and China.

Les is active in scientific organizations outside ACS.  He has been able
to build significant bridges between the various groups and ACS to the
advantage of all the groups and their members.  He Chaired the 2008
Medicinal Chemistry Gordon Research Conference.  He is also a member of
the Executive Committee of the
Royal Society of Chemistry US Section, the
Section's secretary and a fellow of the Society (

The RSC US Section holds many independent
events between Washington and Boston.
However Les has worked to partner the RSC
Section with other groups to strengthen
everyones program.  For example at Spring
2009 meeting the RSC US partnered with the
ACS Green Chemistry Institute.

The Chemistry of Life Science Symposium (right)
is an outstanding example of a collaboration
between the ACS and the Life Science companies
in New Jersey.  Les served on the organizing
committee on 3 occasions.
Les has worked with the organizing
committees of several regional
meetings in the Middle Atlantic and
Northeastern area.

ACS/RSC/IUPAC Advances
in Chemical Sciences Symposium.
Les worked with colleagues at the various pharmaceutical companies in the Boston area and
with the
Northeastern ACS Section to establish a partnership between them and with the Royal
Society of Chemistry, US Section and
IUPAC to co-sponsor the Advances in Chemical
Sciences Symposium in Cambridge, MA.
In North Jersey Les has worked with many of the pharmaceutical companies and Universities and
thanks them again for all of their support as sponsors and hosts of various events.  He was
particularly please to be involved in the ceremony at
Merck in Rahway, NJ to recognize their
contributions to the
discovery of Penicillin.

In his professional work Les has also worked with many collaborators (inside and outside
Novartis).  External partners have included
Gilead, Myogen, Chiron, Locus, BioCryst, Scripps,
UCSD, Cornell University and University of Alabama and of course Les worked at UT Austin
during his Post Doc.
Les is a member of the Inflammation Research Association and organized a symposium at
their International meeting (the symposium was on Kinases).

Les is delighted that the Royal Society of Chemistry has partnered with the
Chemical Heritage
Foundation and looks forward to organizing joint events.
