National Meetings are also an opportunity for councilors to get together and discuss issues of
common interest and concern.
Les has organized 9 technical sessions at National ACS Meetings and chaired the multi-session
"Chemistry of Systems Biology" Presidential Theme for the Boston Meeting (Fall 2007).
North Jersey is part of the Middle Atlantic caucus and this group meets at every National Meeting.
At National Meetings Les has regularly taken part in sessions designed to help students get more out of the meeting and the ACS as well as helping with their career planning.

While Les has responsibilities for outreach to the community and at the National level most of his ACS activities directly relate to local activities for North Jersey.

The National Meeting is also a venue for the presentation of national ACS Awards. This event is an opportunity for ACS to recognize the leaders of our field. Bill Carroll (former President of ACS and current ACS Director) and his wife with Les and Wendy at the National Awards event.

Les represents Novartis on Corporation Associates and has chaired the "Programs" sub-committee. The Heroes of Chemistry Award is one of Corporation Associates flagship programs and the award dinner is a highlight of the Spring National Meeting.

Les participates in the meetings of ACS Budget and Finance Committee
(B&F), as the ConC liaison. B&F which, as stewards of the Society's
financial resources, is responsible for maintaining the health of ACS for
current and future members, prioritizing and focusing on the most strategic
needs and managing ACS resources wisely based on strategic priorities.
A huge challenge and a vital role as ACS has almost 2,000 employees and
154,000 members - the largest technical society in the world.
The Committee on Committees (ConC) is one of the three key Council
Committees of the American Chemical Society whose members are
elected by the ACS Council.
ConC is charged by ACS Bylaws with maintaining a healthy committee
system for all Council related committees. Every committee has a ConC
liaison who is charged with observing the committee, evaluating both
progress but also the committee members for other positions on the
committee and within ACS. The ConC liaison also acts as a coach and
recommeds people for appointment to the committee. Additioinally every
five years, the committee regularly reviews individual committees to ensure
they are operating in a manner consistent with their mission.
ConC also functions as the ACS's HR/Talent Management Group for its
volunteers as recommends to the ACS President and/or the Chair of the
ACS Board the appointment of members as associates, members and
chairs of the various ACS committees. ConC also organizes training for
new committee chairs and provides guidance on many organizational and
Leadership issues.
The National ACS Council elected Les to The Committee on Committees at
the 2006 Fall ACS National Meeting in San Francisco. At the Fall 2008
meeting the members of ConC elected Les as their Chair for 2009. Les
was re-elected to ConC and as ConC Chair at the fall 2009 National
Meeting in Washington. The committee again elected him as their chair in
2010.
As Chair of ConC Les also sits (non-voting) on the Council Policy Committee (CPC) which is the
Executive Committee of the Council,
ConC is currently very busy reviewing and considering the proposals from the Action Enablement
Team. ConC is also working to help the Senior Chemists increase their involvement and
participation and hopes that the many efforts in this area will result in a new National Committee.
Les is a member of the ACS Network on-line networking site and encourages participation.
